Enjoy a day trip to Sapelo Island, one of Georgia’s most historically significant barrier islands. Accessible by ferry with required reservations, Sapelo is the state's fourth-largest barrier island and home to the Hog Hammock Gullah-Geechee community, the R.J. Reynolds Mansion, and the University of Georgia Marine Institute. Visitors can explore diverse ecosystems, including forested uplands, salt marshes, and dunes, or visit the mainland Visitor Center near Darien, GA. Built circa 1815, the Adam Strain Building is a tabby warehouse that was used for a variety of purposes, including the storage of cotton, a ship's chandlery, a pharmacy, and a mercantile. The Adam Strain Building was one of two local structures to survive the Burning of Darien during the Civil War, and the adjoining one-story building housed the Bank of Darien. The building has now been restored and turned into a brewery with great small plates.
