SAPELO ISLAND
Enjoy a day trip to Sapelo Island, one of Georgia’s most historically significant barrier islands. Accessible by ferry with required reservations, Sapelo is the state's fourth-largest barrier island and home to the Hog Hammock Gullah-Geechee community, the R.J. Reynolds Mansion, and the University of Georgia Marine Institute.
Visitors can explore diverse ecosystems, including forested uplands, salt marshes, and dunes, or visit the mainland Visitor Center near Darien, GA. Guided tours feature the Sapelo Island Lighthouse—built in 1820 and restored as a working navigational aid in 1998.
